gloves, sleeves & hand care
your hands are the controller. treat them like one.
why gloves#
- maimai: the screen and ring have friction. 30 minutes of slides without gloves = burnt fingertips and a sad week
- chuni: the slider is the worst. bare hands stick and squeak, sweaty hands stick worse. gloves make slides smooth and consistent
- sdvx: no gloves needed. knobs want grip
what i use#
| item | for | notes |
|---|---|---|
| thin nylon work gloves (the cheap white ones) | maimai, chuni | buy in 12-packs. smooth, cheap, disposable |
| fingerless arm sleeves | chuni | protects the side of my hand on long slides |
| "maimai gloves" (thin, tight, with grippy palm cut off) | maimai | nice but overpriced. the cheap ones work |
| a small towel | everything | sweat on the screen = misses |
glove rules#
- one pair per session, wash after. sweaty gloves have friction like bare hands
- cut the tips off the left glove's thumb if you need grip for start/menu buttons. or don't. i keep changing my mind
- don't wear gloves on sdvx. knob slip is real
- check the fit. too loose = the fabric bunches and drags
hand care#
- stretch before. wrists and fingers, 2 minutes. it feels silly. do it anyway
- stop when it hurts. sharp pain in the wrist or the side of the hand is the "go home" signal, not the "one more credit" signal
- cold water on the fingertips after a long maimai session if they're burning. just cooling, nothing fancy
- moisturize at night, not before playing (slippery hands, sticky screen)
- keep nails short. a nail hitting the screen registers weirdly and hurts
common injuries (from experience)#
| what | from | fix |
|---|---|---|
| burnt fingertips | maimai without gloves | gloves. rest. |
| sore wrist (ulnar side) | chuni slider slides | lower the slider-hand angle, gloves, breaks |
| sore forearm | sdvx knob slamming | relax grip, slam with the wrist not the forearm |
| sore shoulders | maimai 2-hand cross patterns | stand closer to the cab |
if something hurts for more than a few days, stop playing and see someone. no rating is worth it.
